In 1887, about 25 persons under the leadership of
a young minister by the name of Rev. George Scott, secured letters of dismissal from Zion Baptist Church, Louisville, Kentucky,
who themselves had withdrawn from the Walnut Street Baptist Church. The aim was to organize themselves into a distinctive
and separate body.
On November 20, 1887, these 25 persons formed the
Gladstone Baptist Church at the Odd Fellows Hall, 13th and what is now know as Muhammad Ali Boulevard. The church worshiped
successively in various locations. In 1888, a site was secured on 10th Street between Broadway and Magazine and their first
church building was erected. In 1904, the chuch disbanded and reorganized as Emmanuel Baptist Church. On February 17, 1963,
the church moved form 10th Street to its present location because of urban renewal.
In its 120 years, Emmanuel has had seven pastors:
Dr. George Scott, 1887-1889; Dr. John H. Perdue, 1898-1940; Dr. M. D D. Perdue, 1938-1963; Rev. William Brooks, Sr., Acting
Pastor, 1963-1964, Dr. C. B. Lucas, 1964-199?; Rev. Dalton E. Holt, 1999-2004; Rev. Thurmond Coleman, Acting Pastor, 2004-2006;
and Rev. Damien Thompson, 2006 - Present.
